Despite the fact that I write books about girls falling in love for a living, it’s possible that I have some issues with emotional intimacy and verbalising my feelings. Without using a Muppet voice. Obviously I don’t mean here, oh no, I’m more than happy to overshare like a mofo with you guys but with an actual human man for whom I actually have The Feelings? Eeep. Nope. Not a chance.
Withering glance? Yes. Wry, cutting comment at the most inappropriate moment? Absolutely. Twenty minute monologue on why Beyonce and Jay-Z are the most amazing couple in the world? You betcha.
But three little words? Can’t do it.
But what I can do is put together a bitchin’ playlist of The Feelings that is far more eloquent than I could ever be. Should you also be emotionally compromised, please feel free to email this playlist or any of these songs to the object of your affection with the subject ‘I LOVE YOU, DICKHEAD’. Maybe don’t put ‘dickhead’, there’s every chance that’s where I’m going wrong.
Anyway, here you go.
Bloodbuzz Ohio – The National
Have I mentioned that I love The National? I love The National.
Goodnight Song – The Middle Ones
This song and this band make me so, so happy. It says everything you could possibly want to say about spending the night with your lover with harmonies that could only be achieved in real life if you’re in a threeway. And then I feel like the sentiment might be lost.
Mine For Keeps – Cathy Davey
All of this. All of it.
If I Can’t Have You – Etta James + Harvey Fuqua
Old school raaawr. Makes me want to drop my knickers instantly. Sorry.
You’ve Really Got a Hold On Me – The Miracles
We’ve all been here, we just didn’t make it rhyme as well as Smokey.
Little Bit – Lykke Li
So pretty. So pertinent.
Not The Same – Tanlines
The transformative power of love set to a kick arse beat that always makes me want to dance. Favourite song of last year.
Shelter – The XX
Another awesome lady singing it so I don’t have to say it.
Tapping – Sleater-Kinney
‘Sit down, you make me nervous.’
and again live because I love it so much
This Mess We’re In – PJ Harvey & Thom Yorke
Still one of my all time favourite songs ever. Forever-ever? Forever-ever.
Fake Empire – The National
I know, The National is on here twice but quite frankly, it could have been an entire playlist of The National songs and it would have been just as wonderful.
I have a problem.
And yes, there are some repeats from last year’s Valentines Schmalentines playlist but this year they have added pathos, OKAY?
